SPRINGFIELD � Forty clergy and laity were added Wednesday to the list of credibly accused clergy � tripling the register compiled by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Springfield.
The Most Rev. William D. Byrne made the revelation at a press conference at the Bishop Marshall Center near St. Michael�s Cathedral. The 40 names, reflecting decades-old incidents, are in addition to 21 priests and a deacon previously found on the diocesan website.
During the past year and a half, the diocese has taken a number of steps to reform its handling of clergy sexual abuse allegations and become more transparent and accountable.
�I am well aware that the past efforts in the Diocese of Springfield have not achieved that outcome. In fact, some efforts have caused more harm,� Byrne said. �Make no mistake, we still have far to go.�
The bishop described this as a �painful process� that will lead to �true healing.�
The expanded list now includes posthumous allegations deemed to be credible by either the Diocesan Review Board or its predecessor, the Misconduct Commission.
At the time of his installation as bishop in December, Byrne pledged to update the list of accused clergy � something long sought by both victims and their lawyers.
Wednesday�s disclosure comes in the wake of revelations that have rocked the diocese in the past year. Prosecutors recently determined admitted child molester and former priest Richard R. Lavigne murdered Springfield altar boy Danny Croteau in 1972. Also, an independent investigation deemed credible an accusation that the late Bishop Christopher J. Weldon raped a Chicopee boy in the 1960s � making him the second Springfield bishop accused of a sex crime.
The Springfield diocese has settled more than 150 abuse claims and paid out more than $15 million.
Byrne was joined at the press briefing by Jeffrey Trant, director of the Office of Safe Environment.
Trant acknowledged victims and their lawyers have called for a �full throated accounting� from the diocese.
He urged victims to contact the diocese if a name of an abuser is not contained on the diocesan website and to reach out to law enforcement as well.
Byrne will lead a Service of Reparation and Healing at St. Michael�s Cathedral on Thursday at 7 p.m. for all those whose lives have been impact by the abuse crisis. He has urged parishes to hold similar services.
