How many genders are there?

A graphic taught to seventh-graders in Arlington Public Schools says there are infinite genders.

The school system is using the SOGIE Astronaut in its health class curriculum to teach 12- and 13-year-olds about sex and gender, public records requests from the Massachusetts Family Institute and NewBostonPost revealed. SOGIE is an acronym for sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression.

The graphic features an astronaut and other outer space themes. The top of the graphic also says “galaxy of limitless possibilities,” referring to its view that there are many genders.

For “sex assigned at birth” it provides three options:  female, male, and intersex/other.

Further down, it shows a broad spectrum of asteroids for the section labeled gender identity; the section contains many options, including woman, man, agender, gender fluid, enby, androgyne, two-spirit, gender queer, and another. However, it starts with a sign that indicates no gender identity before getting to the end where it shows man and woman.

Similarly, the spectrum of stars for gender expression ranges from a sign that indicates no gender expression to the end where it says masculine, feminine, and androgynous.

The attracted-to section is also a spectrum that ranges from asexual to gay with bisexual in the middle; the section does not include straight as an option.

Im addition, the pronouns section includes options to check six boxes. Those include “she/her/hers,” “he/him/his,” “they/they/theirs” (not they/them), “ze/hir/hirs,” “something else,” and “no pronouns, use name.”

The graphic also defines both cisgender and transgender. It says cisgender is “if your sex assigned at birth aligns with your gender identity,” while it defines transgender as “if your gender identity does not alighn [sic] with your sex assigned at birth.”

The “2SLGBTQIA+ Wellness Center” at the County of Santa Clara Behavioral Health Services Department introduced the SOGIE Astronaut in May 2021. It commissioned local artist Benny Arana O’Hara to create it.

Massachusetts Family Institute communications director Mary Ellen Siegler told NewBostonPost that the graphic doesn’t belong in schools.

“This SOGIE Astronaut is just as absurd and dangerous as other similar graphics like the Gender Bread Person and the Gender Unicorn,” Siegler said by email. “Lessons like these are completely unscientific. They sow seeds of gender and sexual confusion in the hearts and minds of impressionable youth. This isn’t education. It’s indoctrination. The parents of Arlington should insist that the district stop these lessons.”

Arlington is a town in Middlesex County with a population of about 46,000 people, according to U.S. Census data. It is about 6 miles northwest of Boston.
